2017

2016 was definitely a year many would rather forget and I think we are all ready for 2017. From events in politics which will rewrite history, to a never-ending stream of bad news. However, 2016 had its fair share of important technological breakthroughs. Such as, virtual reality finally becoming readily available to the consumer and virtual assistants moving into our homes.

As we know there is always something new on the horizon, so what can we expect in 2017?

Internet of Things…

The IoT is designed to connect all of our devices together, making them work in technological harmony. It’s essentially the connection of all devices, enabling them to send and receive data. Devices will be able to talk to each other, applications and us. The IoT is set to be revolutionary; effecting all aspects of life as well as all industries.

Automation…

Automation is nothing new and some may be thinking how can things become even more automated than it already is? We already have automated customer service such as, the self-checkout in shops. However, more and more jobs are set to become automated in 2017. Such as, robotic journalists who will start branching into other industries. As well as, automated drone delivery which should see a wider-scale testing by the end of the year- especially by amazon.

Everything on-demand…

Last year we saw the development of people getting everything on demand via phone apps. From the likes of getting taxis in minutes from the likes of Uber, food from restaurants from the likes of Just Eat and Deliveroo, movies and TV shows from Netflix and even a place to stay for the night from the likes of Air B&B. We expect to see this develop further in 2017 such as, Urban Massage- an on demand massage service in the comfort of your own home and laundry service apps, who picks up, washes and gets yours clothes back to you within 24 hours.

Self-charging phones…

New technologies, some of which will be showcased at CES are enabling phones to charge through wavelengths. Similar, to show WiFi transmitters deliver data from routers to devices. The targeted energy is pushed out through the wavelengths to charge devices without having to plug them in or place them on a pad.

3D Printing…

3D printers at a consumer grade have been round for a while, yet prices are well above a level most of us can afford. However, that should change in 2017. New models are set to launch with prices that have been drastically reduces. By the time Christmas comes again we may see this as the must-have gift on peoples Christmas lists!
